I grew up outside of Philadelphia, but now I live in Brooklyn, New York, which is also outside of Philadelphia. I am an editor by day, but I contribute music criticism and feature stories to a number of publications as a freelance writer.
For several years, I conducted interviews and wrote feature pieces for Remix magazine, while also penning production-focused capsule writeups for the album reviews section. I was a frequent contributor to Orlando Weekly’s music section, writing artist profiles, record reviews, and show previews for a while, and I served as a freelance assistant editor to Chord magazine in 2007.
My writing has appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Brooklyn Rail, XLR8R magazine, PopMatters, New York Press, New Times newspapers across the U.S., and more. After graduating college, I worked as a research assistant with NPR music journalist Tom Moon on his 2008 book 1,000 Recordings To Hear Before You Die.
The Whisper Council is where I’ll discuss general music stuff as well as my work as a freelance writer. If you’re sending me promo material (please look at what records I write about first) or you’re interested in contacting me, I can be reached here: dominic.umile [at] gmail.com, and I am on Twitter. Thanks for reading.
