Eric, Appoint a Special Prosecutor

Justice Readers, please consider signing a petition that asks AG Eric Holder to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate the war crimes detailed in yesterday’s DOJ memos (and a large number of items circulating for years before yesterday). In an attempt to offer some context for this request, I’ve provided some links to news and commentary after the jump.

Please visit FireDogLake today:

Need a little background?

  • Visit or re-visit Jane Mayer’s 2007 piece in the New Yorker.
  • Most recently, Mark Danner at the NY Review of Books has done an excellent job in underscoring what the Red Cross report really means, and why what was committed under fictional law needs to be investigated, and that certain parties need to be held accountable. Warning: This is very harsh stuff — there is a considerable amount of excerpts here from detainee interviews, detailing exactly what they endured. Reports here and here.
  • Everything Glenn Greenwald has been writing is essential, in my mind, to understanding these developments and the surprising steps taken by the Obama DOJ in recent weeks. Discussion here and here.
  • Scott Horton has done a great deal of writing at Harper’s and The Daily Beast about DOJ-enabled torture, and the importance of seeking prosecutions for the Justice Department/White House staffers involved. Here is a recent post.

Please consider signing the petition.
